“Digital twisters
of bits and bytes
gilded craftsmanship
of seen, but
unseen” ~ Nils
We the digital carpenters
That is what comes to mind when I mull over “the craft” I’m pursuing, webdesign. I call it a craft indeed because I feel like a craftsman when I’ve completed a set of code that perfectly render icons on screen, that dance with joy when moused over.
I like to think that webdesign has more in common with plumbing, electrical wiring, violin making and so on than most people would admit or realize. We build houses called internett sites for people and information to live in.
“Code is poetry” can be seen on the bottom right of Wordpress’s pages, which gives off a certain pride and reverence in the act of “putting stuff on the internet.” When I saw that small label I smiled and nodded because there is indeed something beautiful in a cleanly written piece of code that performs perfectly. Had one or two characters been missing, added out of place or been capital instead of small then that piece of code could’ve failed miserably. The result being a raised eyebrow, a fist in the monitor or most likely a click elsewhere.

Yesterday I was hard at work on this site, tweaking stuff that is probably minuscule or unnoticeable to most people. I had noticed that the logo at the top of the page didn’t link back home, but instead linked to the page in which the viewer currently was. Hardly useful, but not a big crisis either. Still, it ended up taking me roughtly 1.5 hours of extensive searching, implementing other people’s solutions and resorting to full scale “poke n’ hope” before the problem suddenly solved itself.
In near future I hope to add much needed dabs of color and texture to this site, maybe some happy, dancing icons as well. (Just not garish animated .gif flags)
And in the process I’ll be writing what’s on my mind, or what I feel needs to be written. So, do stop by again in the future dear reader.
